Do not self-medicate! In our articles, we collect the latest scientific data and the opinions of authoritative health experts. But remember: only a doctor can diagnose and prescribe treatment.

What are the types of whitening?

There are only two of them: home and clinical, it is also called office.

What do dentists think of whitening strips?

Having white teeth is trendy, a beautiful smile is trending, and people are trying to take care of their teeth. And, of course, companies understand this and produce various strips with an unsafe composition. About a hundred brands promise that there will be a wow effect, “27 tones in 2 weeks”, someone releases with peroxide, someone without it, but these are all marketing moves, you should not trust promises.

Dentists do not recommend whitening your teeth on your own, because the consequences can be the most unpleasant, such as gum burns. Moreover, there are indications and contraindications for whitening, based on this, the dentist determines whether the procedure can be performed on the patient or not, so consultation and observation with a specialist is extremely important for the competent manufacture of individual caps, gel selection. The specialist will explain how to use the home whitening system correctly and safely (I repeat — not strips).
As for companies that produce safe and professional whitening systems, I recommend Opalescence.

What’s wrong with the peroxide in the strips?

Not all manufacturers indicate the concentration of peroxide in the composition, and we cannot be sure whether hydrogen peroxide or carbamide is used. This is important, since carbamide peroxide must be in the composition for home whitening. In addition, the percentage is also selected by the doctor: 10%, 15% 20% or even 22%, and it is impossible to determine this when buying strips on your own.
In addition to carbamide peroxide, there should also be “auxiliary elements” that will protect the enamel from increased sensitivity, since locally a slight sensitivity can occur at home, that is, the composition must be combined.

The formula of the professional home whitening gel is unique. It contains 20% water, which prevents dehydration of the teeth, it also contains the PF element, which contains potassium nitrate and sodium fluoride — this prevents the occurrence of caries and reduces hypersensitivity
Even on the strips, it is important that the gel is applied evenly, which, unfortunately, is also not always observed, and this greatly affects the quality of whitening. With professional home whitening, the patient applies a self-defined “pea” with a gel, thereby controlling its volume. When whitening in dentistry, such a gel is applied by the apparatus, one might say, “stamps” each tooth.

The poor-quality composition of the strips produced by mass-market firms, and the uneven distribution of the gel — all this can cause a strong increase in sensitivity, and then it will be necessary to treat and strengthen the enamel.

What is the safest way to whiten?

Every whitening treatment at InSmile has been tested and selected to be safe and effective. As for companies, we prefer ZOOM. Several generations of lamps have been released, the latest is ZOOM-4. In our clinic, this procedure costs 29,000 rubles, and we have a special advantage in Moscow. We make 4 flashes for 29,000 rubles, while 3 flashes are done as standard, and the fourth is paid extra.

Is it possible for everyone to whiten their teeth or are there contraindications?

There are relative contraindications, such as increased sensitivity of the enamel. In this case, we first treat it, and then we do clinical whitening.
There is also a second type of contraindications — absolute, for example: before the age of 18, the enamel has not yet matured and strengthened, before this age it is strictly forbidden to do bleaching.

What negative consequences can be after whitening?

If the protocol is followed, when whitening is performed in several stages: professional oral hygiene + enamel strengthening + home care + clinical whitening, we minimize the risk of discomfort during the procedure and minimize the occurrence of negative consequences after.

Which of the stars overdo it with bleaching — see our material. And here we showed how veneers change celebrities. And, of course, we are talking about mistakes in dental care — read here what NOT to do.
