Sugar hair removal: the best sugaring paste recipes

Fashion for smooth skin has existed for more than 3000 years! Even in ancient Egypt, the fair sex used wax and sugar compounds to remove unwanted hairs on the skin. The inhabitants of the East got rid of excess vegetation with the help of silk thread, and in the middle of the twentieth century, most women on the planet mastered razors.

In the 70s of the last century, laser hair removal appeared — an innovative technology that allows you to forget about extra hairs for a long time by acting on the follicles with flashes of light.

Each of these methods has a lot of advantages, but there are also disadvantages. For example, laser hair removal is not for everyone, and its cost is still high. Therefore, many women turn to the «golden classic» — sugar hair removal. Moreover, it is easy to prepare pasta for a salon procedure at home — in your own kitchen.

“Until recently, waxing, a technique that involves the use of wax or wax strips, was the most popular home way to get rid of unwanted hairs on the skin. But once you try sugaring, you will never go back to waxing again, ”says Daria Afanasyevafounder of the sugaring studio in New York.

Unlike waxing, sugaring does not require the use of strips with applied wax, the purchase of cosmetic paste. Instead of all this, a paste of sugar, lemon juice and water is used. Sometimes honey and essential oils act as additional ingredients — ingredients that improve the result, making the skin unusually velvety and soft.

Another important difference between waxing and sugaring is the prevention of hair breakage, and hence their further ingrowth. “Because the wax hardens on the skin, it can break off some hairs without pulling them to the surface. So, traditional waxing leaves from 15 to 30% of broken hairs, while shugaring is a higher quality procedure, as a result of which the hairs grow slowly and do not grow in,” sums up the master of shugaring Daria Afanasieva.

A little about sugar paste: why it is better than wax

If we talk about homemade pasta, then it really has advantages over branded wax-based formulations. Since wax contains resins, chemical solvents are required to remove residues, while sugar paste is easily washed off with ordinary tap water.

As mentioned above, homemade sugar paste is made up of three natural ingredients — sugar, lemon juice and water. “It contains only safe natural ingredients. Those with a sweet tooth can even taste it!” says Daria Afanasyeva.

With the help of sugar paste, it is easy to get rid of everything that is superfluous in the armpit area, on the arms and legs, in the bikini area and above the upper lip. The main thing is to follow the rule: the length of the hairs before epilation should be at least two millimeters. This is the length that usually appears 5-7 days after shaving. If you start sugaring regularly, the hairs will grow thinner, and eventually become almost invisible.

Sugar hair removal is recommended every 25 days. Throughout this period, you will have even and smooth skin, and only in the last days before the procedure, a slight “fluff” will be noticeable. And although hair removal with sugar paste is not among the painless methods, it’s worth a little patience in order to get an amazing result.

Did you know?

There is only one type of hair that does not respond well to sugar hair removal. This is male facial hair. They are thick, rough and tough, so more drastic techniques are needed to remove them.

Branded pastes that cosmetic brands produce usually offer formulations from fructose or cheaper raw materials, as well as purified water. As additional additives, preservatives, dyes and perfume fragrances may be present, which is undesirable with a history of allergic reactions.

At home, you can independently adjust the list of ingredients, as well as choose the density of the paste, its density, and even the desired shade. And it can be from very light, almost honey, to dark brown, a shade of black tea.

Recipe 1: Sugar paste with lemon juice (once)

Combine 2 tablespoons of sugar and 10 tablespoons of water in a small container, put it on medium heat. Once the sugar has melted, add 2 teaspoons of lemon juice and stir. Wait for the paste to thicken and turn off the heat. Body temperature paste should be used.

Recipe 2: Sugaring Paste (in reserve)

In a non-stick bowl, combine 2 cups sugar, ¼ cup lemon juice, and 1/8 cup water. Put the mixture on fire and bring to a boil. After that, you need to control the temperature of the paste, it rises rapidly. With a special food thermometer, check the temperature from time to time, as soon as it reaches 115 ° C, the paste must be removed from the heat, cooled and stored in a glass jar. You can use it as needed.

Recipe 3: Sugar paste with honey (once)

In a container, combine 1 tablespoon of sugar and 1 teaspoon each of honey and lemon juice. Boil the pasta for three minutes over low heat. If it is too thick, adjust its consistency with water. This paste is applied to the skin with a cosmetic spatula — against hair growth, after which the epilated area is covered with a light cloth and removed in the direction of hair growth.

Depending on the density and viscosity of the paste, epilation can be carried out in different ways. But the technique for applying and removing the product is the same.

1. The paste should be applied in a thin layer on clean, dry skin — against the direction of hair growth. A viscous paste can be applied with a special spatula, a thicker one can be rolled into a ball the size of a walnut, and the hairs can be removed directly with it.

2. The paste is removed strictly in the direction of hair growth — this helps prevent ingrown hairs and pull them out along with the root. Due to this, the hairs grow more slowly and become thinner, thinner and softer over time.

3. After the procedure, the remaining paste is washed off under the shower. No cosmetics are applied afterwards.

Will it hurt, or for whom shugaring is not suitable

And although each person has a different pain threshold, most people who have tried sugaring note that compared to waxing, it is less painful. But not as painless as, for example, when using a razor.

However, sugar hair removal is suitable even for those with sensitive skin, as well as those who have varicose veins (the temperature of the paste used is body temperature, while waxing involves the use of a noticeably warm paste). After hair removal with sugar, there are no unpleasant sensations that can haunt a woman who resorted to wax. Another advantage of sugaring is perfectly smooth skin for 3-5 weeks.

The advantage of shugaring is that it does not cause irritation, ingrown hairs like wax. After shugaring, the hairs grow thin and soft. If you do it for a long time, then they completely stop growing, the hair follicle loosens, and the hairs do not stay in it.

If the skin is sensitive and delicate, wax injures the skin for several hours or even a day. Discomfort is created, microcracks appear. After shugaring, there are no such problems. As long as the procedure is followed correctly.

Keep in mind that sugar is sold differently. If you bought wet sugar, it will take longer to cook. Dry less time. Boil until the consistency of liquid honey. As soon as bubbles appear, it’s ready. If the syrup is thin, cook for a few more minutes. The cooled mixture should have a consistency similar to plasticine.

If you are doing the procedure for the first time, make the mixture thick and remember that it melts in your hands, without the appropriate experience it will be inconvenient for you to carry out the procedure.

Practice on your legs first, the skin there is not so sensitive. If it works, go to the bikini area, armpits. Wash your armpits thoroughly before the procedure, dry them, sprinkle with talcum powder and only then apply the mixture. After the procedure, it is not recommended to use deodorant for a day.

Expert comment

Hibba Kapil, sugaring master, founder of her own studio

Sugar hair removal is one of the most gentle and delicate ancient techniques. And it is a natural alternative to laser hair removal. The effect of its application lasts even longer than traditional waxing.

Sugar paste does not stick to the skin, as happens during waxing, but only to the hairs. Therefore, when you pull the hairs, you do not pull the skin — the risk of injury to it is minimal.

Sugaring is suitable even for those with sensitive skin and light hairs, it does not cause persistent irritation, and redness disappears after two hours.

After the procedure, avoid hot water, postpone classes in the gym and a visit to the bath or sauna for at least 48 hours. If discomfort bothers you, apply any soothing lotion to your skin. If the discomfort does not go away within two days, contact a dermatologist immediately.
