Why does heartburn start?

One of the causes of reflux (reflux) is a weakening or damage to the lower esophageal sphincter. During normal operation, it closes to prevent food from entering the stomach from entering the esophagus.

The foods we eat affect the amount of acid produced. Thus, a well-balanced diet is the key to controlling heartburn or the more severe forms of reflux and GERD.

What foods can (and should) be eaten with heartburn?

Heartburn symptoms occur when stomach acid comes into contact with the esophagus, causing a burning sensation, irritation, and even pain. If there is too much acid, it is worth including certain foods in your menu that will help relieve the symptoms of reflux.

It is important to understand that food does not cure this disease, but helps to reduce the manifestation. Well, each person has an individual reaction to their use. Unfortunately, there is no universal recipe.

So what are these products?

Individual food triggers

There are a number of foods that trigger heartburn (for example, citrus fruits), but each person may have a different reaction to a particular product. If you are experiencing heartburn, for a while you will have to be attentive to what you eat and write down the body’s reaction to certain foods.

A burning sensation in the stomach or chest after eating, or even sudden vomiting, are signs of reflux and GERD. As well as dry cough, pain, perspiration, irritation in the throat, bloating, belching, hiccups, sensation of a lump in the throat.

To understand which foods trigger your heartburn, keep a food diary and track:

  1. foods you eat;
  2. what time do you eat;
  3. what symptoms accompany each meal and the time after it.

You need to keep a diary for at least a week — this will help you figure out which foods your body reacts to.

Foods that cause heartburn

Doctors argue over exactly which foods definitely cause reflux, but there are foods that cause problems for most people with heartburn. To reduce its manifestations, you can start by eliminating them from the diet:

It is important to understand that you may have personal triggers for heartburn, which is why you need to carefully monitor what exactly you eat.

Lifestyle

Experts agree that the development of reflux and GERD is significantly influenced by a person’s lifestyle. In addition to menu control, lifestyle changes can help to cope with heartburn. Maintain a healthy weight, give up bad habits (smoking, alcohol), do not overeat, eat more fiber, do not eat at night (at least 3-4 hours before bedtime), do not abuse mint gum, do not lie down for at least 2 hours after eating, do not wear tight clothing, especially squeezing the body in the abdomen.

All this, unfortunately, will not be able to completely cure GERD, but will help to significantly reduce the manifestation of this disease. Typically, people manage heartburn by making lifestyle changes, adjusting their diet, and taking antacids prescribed by a doctor. But if these methods do not help, you should discuss this with your doctor and proceed further under his guidance.
