How to use essential oils?

Before applying an essential oil to the skin, it must be diluted with a «base» oil. When used alone, esters often cause irritation, increase skin photosensitivity, and can even cause burns. Natural vegetable oils easily solve this problem, becoming the basis for cosmetic procedures.

The following base oils have proven themselves best in cosmetology:

  • Jojoba oil.
  • Argan oil.
  • Avocado oil.
  • Almond oil.
  • Grape seed oil.
  • Wheat germ oil.
  • Apricot oil.

To carry out a beauty procedure, take 5 ml of natural vegetable oil and add 10 drops of essential oil to it. Use the resulting mixture twice a day — in the morning and in the evening.

Carefully!

Although essential oils are a completely natural product, their use is associated with a high risk of an allergic reaction. Do an allergy test before using the oil blend on your skin.

Apply a little on the inner crook of the elbow and wait 24 hours. If there are no unpleasant reactions, oils can be used.

Precautionary measures

An allergy to essential oils can manifest itself in more than just a rash and skin irritation. A feeling of nasal congestion, coughing, sneezing are possible symptoms that the oil is not right for you.

Citrus essential oils should be used with great care: grapefruit, lemon, orange, and other options. They increase the photosensitivity of the skin, which can cause age spots and burns on it. Therefore, in the sunny season, their use should be combined with the use of sunscreen cosmetics.

Expert comment

Vindhya Veerula, MD, dermatologist, member of the American Board of Dermatology, the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Society of Dermatological Surgeons

Essential oils are a real beauty elixir that can help improve skin condition in dermatological diseases and age-related aging.

But they are not magic remedies, and you need to be patient to see the first results. They should be used for at least 2-3 months in a row.

Freya Upit, beauty industry expert

Time mercilessly takes away your youth, and you would be happy to pay any money to prolong it, but the tenth jar of cream does not give the desired effect. Do not rush to lay out the last funds and run to the surgeons in desperation. Turn to essential oils for help.

Just do not forget to use them as an addition to the base ones, checking before applying on the inside of the elbow. For dry skin, choose avocado oil as the base, for oily skin — grape seed oil, and for sensitive skin — jojoba. Add for 1 tsp. essential oil, 3-5 drops of essential oil, and enjoy the result after the first application.

1. For skin rejuvenation, choose neroli, frankincense, ylang-ylang, jasmine, spruce, clove, and verbena oils.

2. Rosewood, tangerine and geranium oils can tone and smooth out wrinkles.

3. Oils of rosemary, mint, lemon, geranium, almond can whiten and restore a healthy complexion.

4. Tea tree, chamomile, rosemary, fir, lavender and cedar oils help to remove scars, inflammation and narrow pores.

Prepare your own beauty serum by mixing a base oil with various essential oils, pour into a dark glass bottle and use to prolong your youth.
