In previous articles, we have already written about the features of care for oily and combination skin, problem skin with acne, sensitive skin with couperosis and rosacea. In this article, we offer to consider the most relevant issue in the winter time — how to care for dry skinmost sensitive to cold.

How to determine dry skin type

Dry skin is defined by the following signs:

  1. Appearance: matte, with a dull shade, thin, not prone to rashes, no greasy shine, pores are not visible, can be rough, often peels.
  2. Sensation: frequent feeling of tightness, dryness, sometimes itching, increased sensitivity to adverse external factors.
  3. Age-related changes: tendency to early appearance of fine wrinkles, lines of dehydration, decrease in firmness and elasticity.

It is important to distinguish between dry and dehydrated skin. Yes, any type of skin can become dehydrated if it lacks moisture, and this is a temporary sign. Dry skin does not produce enough oil to form a protective film, so it suffers from a lack of moisture and sebum at any time of the year.

Why does the skin become dry?

The main reason for dryness is that the sebaceous glands do not produce enough skin fat and the hydrolipidic barrier does not retain moisture well.

Dryness can also be caused or aggravated by the following reasons:

  • Genetic factor — dry skin type can be inherited from relatives.
  • Skin care — the problem of dryness can be aggravated by the wrongly selected products, insufficient amount, irregularity or improper conduct of procedures.
  • Environmental factors — abuse of tanning or insufficient protection against UV radiation, temperature changes, extreme cold, wind, dry air have a detrimental effect on the skin barrier.
  • Food and water regime — insufficient amount of vitamins and minerals in the diet, as well as an inadequate drinking regime aggravate dryness.
  • Age changes — this factor is beyond our control, but owners of dry skin need to consider that with age the skin becomes more vulnerable.

How to choose products for dry skin care

Basic rules of the beauty routine for dry facial skin:

1. Cleaning. It is better to wash no more than 2 times a day, and for owners of very dry skin — once a day in the evening, so that the skin retains the protective layer of fat longer. We clean the skin with delicate products on a soap-free basis: micellar water, cleansing gel or foam for washing, milk. A good choice for removing makeup is a hydrophilic oil or cleansing oil.

2. Toning — a mandatory step in care, which should not be neglected even in the case of dry skin. We choose an alcohol-free toning lotion that will clean the skin and help wash off the remaining cosmetics.

3. Moisturizing. When choosing a cream, you should pay attention to the composition and texture. It is better to choose thick creams that contain moisturizing substances. We apply moisturizing cream in the morning. For additional hydration during the day, you can use bridge, fluid. We also remember to protect the skin from the sun, because it is even more important for thin dehydrated skin. Cream for the skin around the eyes will retain the necessary moisture in this area.
Serums and masks provide deeper hydration. The serum is applied after the tonic and 20 minutes before the night cream. Moisturizing masks (gel, fabric, cream) can be used 1-3 times a week.

4. Nutrition. The night cream, which is responsible for nourishing dry skin, helps it restore its protective properties and maintain hydrolipidic balance. The nourishing night cream contains linoleic, linolenic, oleic acids, almond oil, shea oil, olives and others.

5. Additional care. In the care of dry skin, you can use exfoliants, but they should act delicately. You can use enzyme (enzymatic) peeling or chemical peelings with a low concentration of AHA-acids.

What are the features of dry skin care in winter

Dry type of skin suffers the most from temperature changes, from cold air and wind, because it is already prone to a lack of moisture and fat. To make moisturizing and protection from external factors more intense, choose creams with a dense texture, apply cold cream, be sure to use a serum or concentrate, nourish the skin with masks 1-2 times a week. At the same time, it is better to do peeling in the winter time less often — no more than once a week.
